In the heart of Nouméa, go back in time and explore the history of New Caledonia from 1853 to 1975.
On Coconut square, the City Museum occupies a 19th-century colonial building, the first bank of New Caledonia in 1874 and then the city hall until 1975. Since 1996, it has hosted the municipal museum, which traces Caledonian history from 1853 to 1953 across three floors. You travel back to the Nouméa of the 1900s and the First World War, crossing paths with the everyday life of Caledonian men and women in town and in the Bush. The route covers the founding of the capital, the establishment of the penal colony and the key stages that shaped the territory. The museum shop offers a selection of books covering the period from 1853 to today. Plan your visit.
