In Boulouparis, on the heights of Ouitchambo, an hour and a quarter from Nouméa, the Éco-gîte de la Ouatchoué sits on a 400-hectare estate between mountain ranges, forests, waterfalls and a river. The large 560-square-metre two-storey house, self-built from wood on stilts, was designed to maximise solar energy. Wood heating, photovoltaic and thermal solar, waste sorting, dry toilets and greywater reuse: an ecological approach structures the place. On site, you'll find an orchard, twelve crayfish-breeding ponds, a koi carp pond and a small farm with hens, peacocks, guinea fowl and ducks.
