Retrace the history of the Bourail tourist region in a fascinating museum located inside a listed historical monument!

Located at the entrance of the village in Bourail within the South Province, the Bourail Museum is housed in a historical stone building that originally served as the penal colony's food store. This cultural experience traces the history of New Caledonia's region across distinct eras, from ancient petroglyphs through to World War II. During the tour, visitors explore the Kanak heritage, history, and traditions of the Orôwé and Neku tribes, as well as the tumultuous life of the agricultural penitentiary and its guillotine. Offering a meaningful discovery to understand local settlement history, our team provides a visitor booklet with each ticket purchase, detailing both the museum exhibits and the preserved penal colony architecture.
