A popular tourist destination and recreational site for the residents of Greater Nouméa, this park is somewhere to get away from it all and enjoy the exceptional native plant and bird species hidden away in the ochre earth of the south.
Twenty-two thousand hectares of mining scrub, dense forest and wetlands stretch across the heart of the Caledonian Great South: this is Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue, established in 1980. You'll come across the quiet remains of last century's logging and mining works, slowly reclaimed by exceptionally dense endemic vegetation. Most of New Caledonia's land birds live here, including the largest wild population of cagous, the territory's feathered emblem and the focus of a provincial protection programme. Themed visits are available on site, with weekdays markedly quieter than weekends. To reach trailheads independently, shuttles run by Sud Loisirs operate inside the park. Plan your visit in advance.
You can visit the site to go hiking or mountain bike riding with your own equipment, or you can rent a mountain bike and/or a kayak with Sud Loisirs located in the Pont Pérignon car park.
