Is snorkeling suitable for children?

Yes, as long as your child can swim. There’s no level required, but depending on the location, it’s important to be comfortable in the water and to know how to swim well, as you can stay in the water for a long time, face slight currents or have very little space between the corals and the surface of the water. Knowing how to breathe with a snorkel is essential, but can be acquired very easily.

When is the best time to go snorkeling?

You can go snorkeling all year round ! During the austral summer, the water is 27-28°C, which is very comfortable for spending time in the water watching the tropical fish. In the cool season, from April to September, the water is around 22-23°C. A wetsuit may be advisable, but is not essential.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No, not necessarily. Most of the time, if you opt for a supervised snorkeling trip, the service provider will lend or rent you the equipment. Fins, masks and snorkels can also be found in Nouméa stores. A neoprene wetsuit may be useful in the cooler months. Don’t forget sun cream and lycra to protect you from the sun.

For a refreshing dip amid rich vegetation, dive into New Caledonia’s natural basins. On Grande Terre, waterfalls and rivers emerge from the Central Mountain Range offering pleasant spots to cool down in. On the east coast, the Tao waterfall features several waterfalls, up to 100 metres high! In fine weather, you can swim in its natural pools and enjoy a picnic. The Blue River Park is home to the country’s largest population of cagous, a local flightless bird known for its unique “barking” call.
