Shark risk in Nouméa:

safety measures in place until April 26

Following a recent shark-related incident, local authorities have introduced temporary safety measures, including restrictions on swimming and water activities in parts of Nouméa’s coastline until April 26.

Published on 16 April 2026

From April 16 to April 26 inclusive, swimming and water activities are temporarily prohibited within the 300-metre coastal strip of Nouméa, as well as around Îlot Maître and Îlot Canard.

Swimming is still permitted in net-protected zones at Lemon bay and Château Royal, allowing for the continuation of safe leisure activities.

Tourism professionals and visitors are encouraged to follow official recommendations and stay informed of any updates during this period.

As part of these safety measures, a targeted shark management campaign will be launched from Tuesday, April 17.
