Description

Memorial to Kabyle deportees.
Few people are familiar with this part of New Caledonian history, yet the Kabyle deportees formed a large community in the 1875s, when the entire west coast of the island as far as Gadji was annexed by the penal colony. On the road to Gadji, this small stele in memory of the Kabyle deportees is one of the rare witnesses to this history.
