Celebrating 164 years of history


Celebrations to mark the city’s anniversary will be held with a festive show on Anse Vata esplanade, the official inauguration of iconic Celeste Fountain and an improv tournament on Place des Cocotiers, and the release of 1,500 sky lanterns and a concert featuring Aussie band Iluka in Magenta.

When Rear Admiral Febvrier Despointes entrusted Captain Tardy de Montravel with the decision of a site for New Caledonia’s future capital, he settled on the area of Nouméa and, on 25th June 1854, the first foundations were laid for the colony’s capital.
