Tjibaou, Hienghène, Mont-Dore, Dumbéa – cultural centers and multimedia libraries are an important part to any visit to New Caledonia. A must-see is the Tjibaou cultural center, located in Nouméa, boasting the richness of Melanesian culture of the past and especially of today. Created by architect Renzo Piano, the building is formed from stylized huts that house permanent and temporary exhibits.

New Caledonia is a land that inspires artists. Most of the galleries are found in Nouméa, but isn’t uncommon to find exhibits in hotels in Grande Terre. Exhibits usually last about two weeks and the styles are very eclectic.

Do you love the theatre? In New Caledonia, you won’t be disappointed either by the quality of the shows or by the choice. The theatre arts scene is extremely lively and passionate. Professional and amateur troops put on inspired or classic plays every month. The Théâtre de l’Île often hosts plays from France to delight the actors, who can then perform close to their audience.

With fantastic music, song or dance festivals, New Caledonia boasts a year-long schedule of various activities, which are often held outdoors. In legendary places like Château Hagen, the Tjibaou cultural center puts on public cultural events you shouldn’t miss. The open-air cinema in the middle of the summer is also a must-see!
