If you are staying for a few days in Nouméa, do not miss a performance at the Théâtre de l'Ile. Placed inside a listed building in Nouville, an old prison building dating to the 19th century, this high culture centre is renowned for the wealth of its programming, which alternates local productions and outside productions.
A theatre with high programming standards
If you love quality theatre, you will be pleasantly surprised by the wealth of plays performed at the Théâtre de l'Ile. Its eclectic and advanced programming leads you into very different worlds. Highly folkloric plays produced by local companies alternate with renowned works performed in France. The strength of the Théâtre de l'Ile is that of attracting famous productions and performers recognised on the other side of the world.

A theatre rich in history
Upon entering the Théâtre de l'Ile, you are immersed in the history of the prison and of deportation. The building - which was to be originally designed to accommodate a church - has experienced various vicissitudes: in 1886 it was turned into a clothes and shoe factory, a food store and warehouse, until the prison administration left.
-
A building transformed into theatre
Long abandoned, becoming nothing more than ruin, the building then rose from its ashes to host the Théâtre de l'Ile. Inaugurated in 2000, it was the outcome of a successful architectural restoration. Its contemporary design blends perfectly with the vestiges of the past, which have been carefully preserved. More than just a theatre, it has become a place of remembrance for the Caledonians.
-
A magical soirée at the theatre
The Théâtre de l'Ile has a special atmosphere. Before entering the beautiful auditorium, admiring its architecture, and then seating comfortably in its red seats, you can enjoy a snack and have a drink with friends on the square. Or you can simply spend time in the lobby, admiring one of the exhibitions of works by local artists that the theatre often presents.
