Spending time in New Caledonia without trying out at least one board sport would be a pity! They are almost a part of the sporting DNA of the territory. Windsurfing, stand-up paddle-boarding or wakeboarding, there’s something for everyone at any level!
No need to be a board-sports fanatic to get started! In Nouméaa, Poé, Koumac or Hienghène, schools offer beginner classes for board sports so you can try a few hours enjoying the ocean environment. But be careful – once you try it, it’s really hard to resist the temptation of going back every day!
Mention windsurfing in New Caledonia and the stories will come in waves! Lots of Caledonians remember Robert Teriitehau and the images of the Nouméa Dreamcup, an international competition organized for many years in Nouméa. Since then, this sport has taken off, and Caledonians know how to make their mark on the world scene of windsurfing. The young generation is especially promising: Lilou Granier, Basile Jacquin and Nicolas Goyard are three up-and-comers. These are examples to follow on the Caledonian water!
Stand-up paddle in full sail
Whether relaxing or in its more athletic version, stand-up paddle, affectionately called SUP, is just as popular as windsurfing. Standing on your board, early morning is the best time to enjoy an outing on Anse Vata Bay, when the breeze hasn’t yet picked up. For the more athletic, feel free to take off on a windy afternoon! Once again, New Caledonia has no shortage of champions, because for several years, Titouan Puyo has won many awards nationally, in Europe and in world championships!
Less competition for more fun! By choosing wakeboarding, you’re choosing extreme sensations, and without a doubt for beginners, a few memorable wipeouts. This is a must-do for those who want to rise out of the water standing, towed by a boat. This is an option that those who love board sports and waterskiing will surely want to try out just to improve their technique, and a solution that’s great for those who love adrenaline!
